Extension of Deadline for Registration of Data Controllers/Processors of Major Importance

Following the Guidance Notice issued by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) in February 2024, a registration exercise was initiated for all public and private institutions that collect personal data from individuals residing in Nigeria and are classified as “Data Controllers and Processors of Major Importance” (DCPMI).

The NDPC formally wishes to inform all stakeholders that the registration deadline has now been extended from June 30, 2024, to September 30, 2024. This extension follows several stakeholder engagements and aims to provide additional time for organizations to comply with the registration requirements and ensure the implementation of necessary data protection measures. Additionally, the NDPC has waived any applicable penalty fees.

Therefore, organizations designated as DCPMIs are encouraged to take advantage of this extension and comply with the registration requirements by the new deadline to avoid sanctions or penalties from the regulator.
